cover Everything and More: A Compact History of Infinity (Great Discoveries)

The best-selling author of Infinite Jest on the two-thousand-year-old quest to understand infinity. One of the outstanding voices of his generation, David Foster Wallace has won a large and devoted following for the intellectual ambition and bravura style of his fiction and essays. Now he brings his considerable talents to the history of one of math's most enduring puzzles: the seemingly paradoxical nature of infinity. Is infinity a valid mathematical property or a meaningless abstraction? The nineteenth-century mathematical genius Georg Cantor's answer to this question not only surprised him but also shook the very foundations upon which math had been built. Cantor's counterintuitive discovery of a progression of larger and larger infinities created controversy in his time and may have hastened his mental breakdown, but it also helped lead to the development of set theory, analytic philosophy, and even computer technology.

The collapse of the Bush presidency poses risks "It really is striking that whenever one is convinced that Bush's unpopularity ratings have reached their nadir, the one thing that can always drive them even further downward is Bush's appearance on national television to explain himself to the country (or, to use Jules Crittenden's classic formulation: for the President to "address us . . . and show us the way forward"). Even after six years, the more Americans see and hear from George Bush, the more they dislike him."

George Bush Question time with Kids | Clipmarks George Bush goes to a primary school to talk to the kids to get a little PR. After his talk he offers question time. One little boy puts up his hand and George asks him his name. “Stanley,” responds the little boy. “And what is your question, Stanley?” asks ol’ Dubya. “I have 4 questions” the kid responds. “First, why did the USA invade Iraq without the support of the UN?” “Second, why are you President when Al Gore got more votes?” “Third, whatever happened to Osama Bin Laden?” “Fourth, why are we so worried about gay-marriage when 1/2 of all Americans don’t have health insurance?” Just then, the bell rings for recess. George Bush informs the kiddies that they will continue after recess. When they resume George says, “OK, where were we? Oh, that’s right question time. Who has a question?” Another little boy puts up his hand. George points him out and asks him his name. “Steve” the kid responds. “And what is your question, Steve?” el presidente asks. “Actually, I have 6 questions” the kid responds. “First, why did the USA invade Iraq without the support of the UN?” “Second, why are you President when Al Gore got more votes?” “Third, whatever happened to Osama Bin Laden?” “Fourth, why are we so worried about gay marriage when 1/2 of all Americans don’t have health insurance?” “Fifth, why did the recess bell go off 20 minutes early?” “And sixth, what happened to Stanley?”

Craigslist Meets the Capitalists Craigslist Meets the Capitalists - Mergers, Acquisitions, Venture Capital, Hedge Funds -- DealBook - New York Times: "Jim Buckmaster, the chief executive of Craigslist, caused lots of head-scratching Thursday as he tried to explain to a bunch of Wall Street types why his company is not interested in “monetizing” his ridiculously popular Web operation. Wendy Davis of MediaPost describes the presentation as a “a culture clash of near-epic proportions.” She recounts how UBS analyst Ben Schachter wanted to know how Craigslist plans to maximize revenue. It doesn’t, Mr. Buckmaster replied (perhaps wondering how Mr. Schachter could possibly not already know this)."
